On many salon evenings, we’ve enjoyed Murat Parlak performing alongside other artists—sometimes in a reading or a play, sometimes singing, or in a duo with other instruments. They were all wonderful events. But now it was high time to hear him perform as a soloist again. He has recently discovered for himself the very rarely performed Catalan composer Frederic Mompou, whose compositions were strongly influenced by the Impressionists Debussy and Satie and which he composed entirely in the style of minimalism. In his short pieces—often the result of a long creative process—he followed his personal maxim: “To write not a note too many, nor a note too few.” Murat Parlak finds himself reflected in this approach. In keeping with his individual style and inspired by Mompou, he has composed several pieces, which he premiered alongside Mompou’s works at the concert “A Journey into the Unknown.” It was a journey into unknown worlds of sound—emotional, uplifting, and inspiring. At many points, the audience held its breath, eagerly anticipating which note would come next. The evening’s violent thunderstorm blended harmoniously with the bells from Fréderic Mompou’s pieces.
In keeping with this, Murat Parlak’s original compositions were unusually delicate and gentle, yet full of contrast. These are pieces you’ll want to listen to again and again.
