It is fascinating to imagine how a raw block of stone can be transformed into a delicate sculpture that bears no resemblance to its original form carved out of the rock. We admire with enthusiasm the many perfectly crafted figurative and abstract sculptures from antiquity, the Middle Ages, and modern times that adorn our museums. However, what we see is the result of a long process. At the beginning of this process, sculptors were and still are drawn to quarries, constantly searching for the right material. Frank Teufel gave an impressive explanation of this exciting journey from quarry to sculpture. Through his lecture and a multimedia show that was well worth seeing, he vividly guided the audience through all the stages necessary to create the delicate structures that currently decorate the Stadtstadel, drawing on his extensive knowledge of history and the present day. The interested participants listened attentively to his speech and sparked a lively dialogue with their many questions. A good start to the autumn month of November.
