Thomas Lucker "Turning Points – Light and Stone"

from the 23th of January 2026 until the 12th of April 2026

What makes the figures that Thomas Lucker carves in stone so special that they touch us? They are in motion and yet static. They radiate a great presence and at the same time are trapped in a moment of inwardness. They are completely in the moment – and yet on the move. Do they signal a turning point? The next step seems crucial, but where does it lead? That seems uncertain. Do we fall or jump? People in Africa. On ships. Faces. Figures in free fall, floating in the air. Is it going down or up? Many things are conceivable; the viewer's gaze is decisive. Thomas Lucker spent his childhood and youth at sea, knows the departures and farewells, but above all the in-between, the longtime at sea, in which memory and reality blur. In his art, he is not satisfied with individual levels of reality. He interweaves the permanent and the transient, captures "carved in stone" what was only intended for the moment. He combines stone and photography in a unique technique. His exposed limestone sculptures are always insights. They fix moments of life that can tip over at any moment.

Thomas Lucker was born in 1959 in Osten an der Oste into a family of captains. After training as a stone sculptor and studying art in Hanover, he has been living as a freelance artist in Berlin since 1995. In addition to his work as a sculptor, he is also active as a restorer, among others for the Pergamon Museum in Berlin and the Romano-Germanic Museum in Cologne, but also on archaeological excavations in Sudan and Egypt, as well as in projects in Israel, Seoul, Rome and Istanbul. The Neues Museum in Berlin bears his signature to a large extent.

The exhibition is open from Friday to Sunday, between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. You can also arrange personal visits to the exhibition through our contact form on our website. We look forward to your visit!

About the house on Illerstraße

The house at Illerstraße 15 is one of the oldest houses in the former imperial city of Kempten. Its history dates back to the 13th century and is closely connected with the neighboring Mühlberg ensemble. The building, erected by the lord abbot, served to care for pilgrims, travelers and the needy. Around 1600, a patrician family resided in the three-story gable-roofed building. Later, the city took over the building and converted it into a municipal construction depot. Since then, it has been called the Stadtstadel.

At the end of the 20th century, the house was renovated with great attention to detail. Backfilled cellar roo sms were uncovered and an aged pillar as well as an antique millstone were discovered in the process. Among the special features are Renaissance paintings and Gothic rafters. After different uses, the Stadtstadel has become a place for contemporary art and culture since 2021.

About
Birgit Kastner-Simon

After more than thirty years of management experience in strategic marketing and communications, I decided to devote more time to my interest in art and culture and, with the acquisition of the Stadtstadel, to give it a permanent space.

I am fascinated by the exploration of different styles in art and the dialogue with artists as well as visitors. It is an inspiring task for me to present the beautiful things in life holistically and to make them accessible to those who are interested.
